Theme 1: War takes a toll on all of those involved.
War is a terrible thing but without it we wouldn't be where our great country is today. Because of this though there is a big risk with war. It impacts everyone involved whether it be the actual soldiers out fighting, the families of these soldiers, or just the civilians being fought for. The picture above to the left shows a army grave yard where hundreds of soldiers are buried do to the death of war. All of the families of these soldiers have to deal with the loss in order for our country to be where it is today.
Theme 2: Life is a constant battle, just like the struggles of war.
In this book, it relates the struggles and difficulties of war, with the battle of every day life. The main character, Matt, has to face a terrible head injury. This puts him in the hospital for a while giving him lots of time to just think. With this set back due to war, he now has to get through his every day life, dealing with the problem he has to face. He talks a lot about his family back home and how he is fighting for them to be able to live their lives the way they want, while he struggles to keep his life. So while he struggles to get his life back on track, he is battling just to get back and do more out in Iraq.
